How do we evaluate crypto exchanges?
We evaluate every exchange in our ranking against six criteria that have become industry-standard worldwide, especially since MiCA took effect in the EU.
1. Regulatory status – licensing or registration appropriate to the regions the exchange serves (e.g. CASP under MiCA in the EU, FinCEN/state registration in the US, FCA authorisation in the UK, or equivalent licences in Asia). Without this, an exchange shouldn't be trusted with your funds.
2. Jurisdictional coverage – whether the exchange is available, and properly licensed, in your specific country.
3. Convenient deposits – support for bank transfers, cards, and regional payment methods, with transparent fees.
4. Fees – industry-standard maker/taker fees are low (often well under 0.2%), with discounts available for holding the exchange's native token or reaching higher volume tiers.
5. Proof of Reserves – a cryptographic proof that the exchange holds sufficient funds to cover client balances. Since the FTX collapse, this is considered a baseline expectation.
6. Customer support quality – responsiveness, language coverage, and availability of 24/7 live chat.

Regional availability – what to check before signing up
Not every exchange is available, or fully licensed, in every country. In the EU, look for a MiCA CASP licence. In the US, availability and product offerings vary by state due to differing regulatory requirements. In the UK, the exchange should be registered with the FCA. Across much of Asia, requirements vary by country – Japan and Singapore, for example, have well-established licensing regimes.
Before depositing funds, always confirm on the exchange's own website that it is available and properly authorised to serve residents of your specific country.
Security – how not to lose your funds
Enable 2FA – using a TOTP app (Google Authenticator, Authy, Aegis) or a hardware key (such as a YubiKey). Avoid SMS-based 2FA, which is vulnerable to SIM-swap attacks that have affected high-profile accounts in the past.
Use a withdrawal address whitelist. Even if someone gains access to your account, they won't be able to send funds to an unknown address.
Don't keep everything on an exchange. Move larger amounts to a hardware wallet such as Ledger or Trezor – remember, "not your keys, not your coins".
Log in via a bookmarked link or the official mobile app. Search engines are sometimes polluted with phishing ads using look-alike domains.
